Toronto Urban Retreats — The Five Essential Realizations
Both Toronto sessions (Sept 28 – Oct 6 and Oct 15 – 18) focus on the Five Essential Realizations of Buddha Dharma.
“These five increasingly profound realizations are indisputable, unshakable and adamantine. They bridge the mundane experience and the unchanging transcendent nature of all beings and all their experience.” — Lama Chokyi Gyaltsen, The Five Essential Realizations of Buddha Dharma, August 2025
Lama Gyaltsen will draw from the three major cycles of the Buddha’s teaching — from the first turning of the Wheel of Dharma through to the ultimate view and activities of the third turning, Vajrayana. He will also teach the foundational recognitions and wisdom understandings that build a sturdy basis for these realizations — especially:
- Causality (karma)
- Naming and experience
- Bodhicitta
Recognitions, guidance and practices will all be given, alongside reading transmission, commentary and meditation on:
- Ju Mipham’s text, Profound Instruction on Śamatha.
- Longchenpa’s Precious Treasury of Phenomenal Space — the root text for his Seven Treasures.
- The Mahāmudrā, Eliminating the Darkness of Ignorance by the Ninth Karmapa, Wangchug Dorje.
For experienced practitioners only:
The Drikung Yangzab Empowerment of Hayagriva Kilaya and practice instructions — an extraordinarily powerful means of removing and averting obstacles and obstructions and clearing arrogance and impediments. Open only to mature, experienced practitioners of Vajrayana. Time, date and location to be announced.

The utterly profound practice of a White Mañjuśrī and Sarasvati mandala from the collected direct instructions (Upadesha) of Gyalwang Rinchen Puntsok (16th century) for a celebration and recollection of Ven. Dorje Namgyal Rinpoche’s great gifts to countless beings. Also, a pith Guru Yoga practice of the Union of Guru Rinpoche–Namgyal Rinpoche as revealed to Lama Gyaltsen. All are welcome to attend!
