Tranquility to Dzogchen: the Practice and Experience of Luminous Emptiness

October 13 @ 7:00 pm - October 24 @ 11:30 am UTC-8

Tranquility to Dzogchen: the Practice and  Experience of Luminous Emptiness

with Lama Mark Webber

at The Dharma Centre of Canada

 — October 13th to 24th, 2018 —

We are pleased to announce that Lama Mark will be giving a two week Dzogchen Trekchö meditation and study retreat at the Dharma Centre of Canada.

Dzogchen or Atiyoga—translated as Great Completeness or Great Perfection— refers to the highest of meditative yogas for realizing mind essence. It is the distillation of all experience, our primordial nature. It is ‘great’ (-chen) because it is beyond any concept, fixation or obstruction. All experience is already perfect (dzog-)—naturally empty of any taints or obstructions—it is utter purity. Dzogchen is spontaneous great compassion, a pervasive freedom that contacts countless beings. Through Dzogchen the luminous-empty, yet cognizant quality is discovered to be the meditation, the study, the reflection and activity.

The retreat will start with an empowerment of Guru Rinpoche. Lama Mark will also begin with teachings and meditations on the mind of enlightenment (bodhicitta), by commentary on Lama Khunu’s 356 verses on bodhicitta.* This will lead into several days of instruction and practice of tranquility meditation. The rest of the retreat will be the step by step exploration, commentary and meditations of Trekchö, the practice of ‘thoroughly cutting through’ the apparent solidity of experience. The text used will be Patrul Rinpoche’s 19th century commentary of the Hitting the Essence in Three Words of Garab Dorje, with additional explanations by Ven. Namgyal Rinpoche and Lho Ontül Rinpoche. We will finish with a purification smoke offering.

  1. Days 1-3, Guru Rinpoche Empowerment and Bodhicitta meditations.

  2. Days 4-6, Tranquility meditations and practice

  3. Days 7-11, Dzogchen Trekchö, Hitting the Essence in Three Words of Garab Dorje

  4. Day 12 (morning), Purification Smoke Offering (Vajravidarana)

There will be opportunities for interviews with the teacher.

Lama Mark Webber (Lama Yongdu Chokyi Gyaltsen) has been studying, practicing and teaching Buddha-Dharma for over forty years. For thirty years his main root teacher was the great Ven. Namgyal Rinpoche who taught all three cycles of the Buddha’s teachings, including Abhidhamma, Vipassana in the lineage of Mahsi Saydaw, generation and completion stage practices of the Tantrayana and Mahamudra/Dzogchen of many lineages, especially of the Karma Kagyu and Sakya. More recently under the guidance and request of Drikung Lho Ontul Rinpoche, Lama Mark has been teaching principally the richness of the Drikung Mahamudra and Drikung Yangzab Dzogchen traditions.

Lama Mark has a deep and long term interest and collaboration in a number of scientific fields and the arts which he integrates with the teaching of Buddhism.

His compassionate activities demonstrate a profound commitment to freeing beings from innumerable suffering states. Lama Mark’s emphasis with practitioners and students is on uncovering pure Dharma to reveal its extraordinary benefits and share the great joy of its deep study, meditative practices and integration into all aspects of our lives.
